Management’s Musings

Welcome to our 2012 season!!

This year there is a change in the management for the SBTL. Steve Hussey and Kerry Seifert have volunteered to manage the league. We’d like to thank Warren Morimoto and Dennis Fazio for the great job they have done over the last four years in making the SBTL a great success. We hope to continue their examples of successful league leadership.

With this change in leadership, we have updated the SBTL contact phone number for shooters to call. As always, please use the Contact Us page on the website first, however if you need to leave us a voice message, please use our Google Voice number: 408-409-6103. Speak slowly and distinctly and don’t forget to leave a contact number in case we need to get back to you.

In 2011 we averaged 117 shooters during our full schedule. Our bank is healthy and because of such great participation last year, we believe we will be able to maintain last years pricing of $45.00 per shooter for this year. Thanks for all your support shooters!

Also, a big thanks go out to all of our league volunteers. Each of them has spent many hours away from their busy schedules to ensure our shoots run smoothly and professionally. Warren Fay, who has done a phenomenal job creating the software we use to manage the various shoots, has also volunteered to continue with us this year (and hopefully far into the future).

And just as important to the success of the league as Steve, Kerry, and Warren, is our office staff from 2011, all of whom have re-volunteered for 2012. Our thanks, in advance, go out to Ferdi Abraham, Bob Graves, Glenn Klein, Buck Lyons, Kirk Mitchell, Mark Stoney, and Mike Ross. Please remember that without the support of all these volunteers the league would not exist. So when you have a chance, give them a quick "thanks" for all the hard work they put in making the SBTL the great trap league that it is.

Another significant part of our success is our supporters. Year after year Tilden Trophies, Cust-M-Bilt Buckles, Bob and Irene Popenhager, Bob Graves of Ljutic Shotguns, Dave Smith at Cupertino Roofing, Don Cole at Custom Ear Protection, Dr Lisa Devlin, Mike Mazzucchi at Mazzucchi Contracting, Joe Territo of Territos Tree Village, and Shelly Werfelmann at Libery Insurance have financially supported our league. Please remember these people and their services as you progress through your year.

As we begin the 2012 season, to those of you success ful shooters in last year’s Grand, please remember to pick up your winnings and awards from the Grand at our first shoot in Los Banos.

There have been a number of ATA rules changes for the coming year. Since many of our shooters shoot the ATA and many of our host clubs train their scorers to support both the ATA and SBTL, the SBTL attempts to minimize confusion by making our rules similar to the ATA’s. The two ATA rule changes that have an immediate impact on the SBTL are: 1) an update to the Doubles Failure to Fire rule; and 2) a 2 yard reduction that the ATA is offering some of their shooters.

The SBTL will be adopting the updated ATA Doubles Failure to Fire rule in total. Please note the explanation in the "Notes from the Shoot Office" for both the Failure to Fire rule and the impact of the ATA 2 yard reduction.

We hope your holiday season was a good one and look forward to seeing you in Los Banos on February 11th for our first shoot. Remember, Highway 165, 3/4 mile north of the Los Banos Sportsman Club has been closed for a major rebuild. They are supposed to finish in February however shooters should not count on it. The actual closure is Henry Miller Road 3/4 mile north of the Sportsman Club north to the intersection of Highway 140 and 165 (Lander Ave from Turlock - Hwy 99 thru Hilmar/Stevenson). This closure will effect the shooters coming to Los Banos from the Modesto, Turlock, and Waterford.

Cheers,

Steve and Kerry

Notes from the Shoot Office: Starting the Season Off Right!

The shoot office welcomes you to another year of fun with guns. We work very hard to make yours an enjoyable experience and as always, if a shooter has any questions, please come in and see one of us and we will help you the best we can.

As we start a new season, we want to remind you/update you on several items:

  • At the beginning of each season, we remove any declared minimums that a shooter requested be set on their shooter record for last season. This means that if you told us last year that you wanted to shoot no lower than 24 yards so you can stay on your squad, that notation has been removed from your record so the auto-handicapper can recalculate where each shooter "should be" shooting. If you would like us to place a new minimum on your record, please let us know and we will be happy to oblige.

  • Please check your starting handicap classes and yardage closely. For continuing shooters, the first time that you shoot is the bucket that you will be competing in for the yearend awards. For new and new-ish shooters, the handicapping of your 6th ever shoot will be the classes/yardage that you will compete in for the yearend awards. If anyone has questions, please see Warren FAY.

  • The ATA has made a significant modification to the Doubles Failure to Fire (DF2F) Rule this year. Shooters are still permitted only two legal F2F’ s for each doubles sub-event, however the shooter will no longer automatically lose a pair if they have an F2F on the second bird after missing the first bird.

Under the old rule, a shooter who had what would be a legitimate F2F on the second target of a pair after missing the first target, was scored "Lost Pair" and no F2F was charged. Under the new rule, a shooter who misses the first target of a pair and has an F2F on the second bird will be charged with an F2F AND will be allowed another "repeat" pair. The shooter will be required to shoot at both targets and no matter the new results on the first target, it will be scored "Lost" and the second target will be scored as-shot. In other words, while there is a "do-over" for the "pair" there is no "do-over" for that first target. The formal version of the ATA rule can be found on the ATA website. Oh, also remember that it is illegal to shoot at the same target twice. One cannot ignore the first bird of the pair and just shoot at the second bird.

  • The ATA has offered a special one-time-only 2-yard reduction to some of their shooters. This "might" affect an SBTL shooter if the SBTL auto-handicapper is pegging it’s yardage on that shooter’s ATA yardage.

The SBTL rules dictate that each shooter shoot at their longest yardage. One of the most confusing things for new and seasoned SBTL shooters alike is how the SBTL calculates their handicap yardage. While the SBTL "takes into account" the shooter’ s ATA/P ITA yardages, the SBTL yardage is calculated differently and SEPARATLY from the ATA/P ITA. It is possible that the shooter’s SBTL yardage is calculated as longer than the shooter’s ATA/P ITA yardages.

If you are shooting ATA and/or PITA, you need to make sure that we have your ATA/PITA shooter ids on file with the SBTL. In addition, when you earn advancements or reductions with the ATA/PITA, please be sure to let the handicapper know each time you shoot at an SBTL tournament.

If the SBTL shooter has shot an ATA and/or PITA event in the last two years, the SBTL auto-handicapper will take their ATA and/or PITA yardage into account when it handicaps that shooter. Since the ATA is revising its yardage, it is particularly important that the shooter lets our handicapper know what their "proper" ATA yardage is be fore they shoot at each SBTL tournament. A shooter found to be shooting at the wrong yardage will have his/her scores disqualified and any monies and/or trophies won will be forfeit.

If the ATA shooter accepts an ATA yardage reduction and that shooter's SBTL handicap is based on their ATA yardage (as their "longest" yardage), the SBTL will be happy to re-handicap the shooter. Please note that the shooter can have their SBTL yardage reduced by only ONE YARD from the last yardage that they shot.

Again, the SBTL calculates a shooter's yardage separately from the ATA. It is possible that the shooter's SBTL yardage is longer than the shooter's ATA/PITA yardage and a reduction in the shooter's ATA yardage will have no impact on the shooter's SBTL yardage.
