Notes from the Shoot Office: Grand/Year-End

We have many new shooters with us these days, so it behooves us to take a moment to go over the couple of differences that separate the Grand from a regular league shoot and explain some of the intricacies of the Year-End Awards.

At the Grand, while the purses for the Singles and Doubles events are handled just like usual, the Handicap Event has an additional purse and several purse/option changes:

• Since we shoot 100 birds in Handicap, we add a 50’s Option (which is separate from the Perfect 50’s Purse). The 50’s option is figured in exactly the same manner as the 25’s Option, however it is calculated on the first, middle and last 50 in the event. As with the 25’s option it is paid at 50, 30, 20%, Percentage System. The cost to enter the 50’s Option is $12.00 ($4.00 per 50).


• The Perpetual Purse entry is increased from $3.00 to $6.00 and pays a total of $240.00 instead of the usual $120.00.


• Because there are 2 more sub-events (50 more birds), the cost of the 25’s Option changes from $5.00 to $10.00. The payout remains at $2.50 per sub-event.


• There are no changes to the Lewis and Blind Draw Options. They remain at $5.00 and $2.00 respectively.


• The total cost for the Program with all Purses and Options becomes $97.00 for an adult. ($55.00 for the Program and $42.00 for all the Purses and Options.)

Lots of questions have been asked about the Year-End awards:

• To qualify for a Year-End award a shooter must register a minimum of 5 scores for that event in that season.


• For shooters that have been with the league for a while, the first classification and/or yardage group that you shoot in during each season is the Year-End Classification/Yardage group that you participate in at the end of that season. It does not matter what class or yardage one is actually shooting in at the end of the year, it is the first time one shoots during the season that makes the determination.


• For shooters that have less than 5 (five) scores registered with the league before the 2011 season (since 2007), it is the classification and handicap for the 6th registered score that will be used to determine which classification and yardage bracket they are in for the Year-End Awards. For example, excluding any grand, lets assume a shooter started with us late in the 2010 season and shot 3 tournaments. They then shot in February and April 2011. Whatever they are handicapped at for the May 2011 tournament (their 6th registered score) is the classification/yardage bracket that is used to determine their Year-End bracket for 2011. The reason that we do this is to make sure that a shooter is properly handicapped before they are added to the Year-End Awards roster. This helps us maintain integrity and equitability with our long time shooters as we acquire new shooters. Please see the important note at the end of this article for corrections to the Year-End brackets due to this rule.


• Year-End scores for Singles and Doubles are calculated as the sum of the shooter’s best five (5) scores for that event for the season. Ties are first resolved by first looking at the shooter’s 6th score of the season and then by shootoff at the Grand. An example: Dave Mishler and Wouter Scheepe are both competing for the "B" Class Singles Year-End Award this year. They both shot a total of 239 for the year however Dave’s 6th score of 45 edges out Wouter’s 6th score of 43. Because of his 6th score, Dave is declared the winner.

How are All-Stars determined? Why are All-Star Alternates? I don’t understand how they compete:

• The SBTL All-Stars are divided into two classes: All-Stars and Alternate All-Stars.


• The All-Stars are the Top 20 Shooters based on the sum of the top five (5) total scores for each shooter (ties are included).


• Alternate All-Stars are noted as the shooters with the next highest total scores after the Top 20. Since not every All-Star will compete in the Grand, we use the Alternates to fill the pool of "All-Stars" that actually shoot at the Grand. The pool is filled until we get at least 20 total All-Star shooters actually competing for the All-Star Awards. The pool is filled based on "scores", so for example if we exhaust the list of All-Stars and need at least 4 additional shooters, we go down the list for those shooters that are actually at the grand. Assuming Ferreria, Jim Puckett, and Ren are there, we then get to Nannetti. Joe’s score is shared by Guernsey, Eldredge and Wunder, so they would be drawn into the pool to make a total pool of 23.


• All-Stars and Alternates will shoot with all other shooters, however their scores are separated out when the calculations are done to determine the daily awards. The All-Stars and Alternates compete for the 8 "All-Star" Awards. All other shooters compete for the rest of the 19 regular participation awards. This makes it advantageous for the "normal" shooter since they are no longer competing against the crème-de-la-crème of the SBTL shooters. The lowest total score used to determine the last Alternate at the Grand, whether or not the shooter shoots the Grand, determines who will receive an All-Star Pin. Continuing the example above, if 670 is the final break point for including Alternates in the Grand All-Star pool, then all the All-Stars and Alternates with scores of 670 or above will receive an All-Star pin for the 2011 Season, whether or not they shoot the Grand.

Oh my gosh, something changed in the Year-End Brackets. What happened?

Well, simply put, a mistake happened. During a routine audit, a mistake in the computer code that is used to determine the Year-End brackets was discovered. It took about 45 engineering hours to find, debug, fix and test the (corrected) code. This resulted in a change to several shooters which in turn changed several outcomes. We apologize to all shooters for representing erroneous Year-End brackets and results from June until now, however things are now corrected, checked and double checked. While computers operate perfectly, us engineering types are NOT perfect.
